Pukapuka Poem #35 'Rock and Cave' - Michael O'Leary

Rock and Cave

at Whatipu

the caves are hollow

                        and hidden

no light or

life can be seen in

                        these solitary places

and then

the heads of the Western

                        Manukau jut out

Buffeted, undermined

by winds and

                        by rain and salt water

if you

stand on the beach

feeling the force of the elements

and look

up to the safety and

                        darkness of the caves

then decide

on te wahi moemoeä, shadows

                        and the half-life

or stand strong, Kia Kaha,

and be shaped and eroded

down to the last pebble of existence
